Spencer Municipal Utilities (SMU) is a successful municipally-owned utility provider currently seeking a full-time System Administrator to join the team due to a recent promotion within the company. We are seeking an organizational leader with experience serving in a customer-focused operation.  Reporting directly to the Telecommunications Manager, this position has complete responsibility to provide and carry out planning, development, implementation, operation, and technical support for SMU’s network operations both customer and corporate. This includes systems that operate Voice, Video, and Data services. The System Administrator will also participate in network security with other team members. Act as the subject matter expert on all IP products and services, including VoIP, MPLS, RIP, BGP, EIGRP, OSPF, SSL, VPN, and IPTV.

SMU has proudly met the electric and water needs of local Spencer, Iowa residents since 1942.  Telecommunication service offerings were added for the community in 1997, and today SMU provides subscribers with a full range of voice, video, and data services.  The organization is presently engaged in completing the final phase of a multi-year FTTH (fiber to the home) build project which will eventually serve all SMU customers.

Our Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science or related program; or a combination of education and relevant work experience totaling five (5) years.
     • At least one (1) to three (3) years networking experience
     • CCNA certification desired but not required
     • Knowledge of one or more of the following systems is desired but not required. C15, Calix CMS and SMX, APMax and Innostream
     • Required to possess and maintain a valid Iowa driver’s license and meet SMU insurability requirements.
